Facilitation in HEDS

Participation in HEDS is centred around collaborative problem-based learning (PBL). Each PBL group is supported by a facilitator pair who help the group develop a productive, inclusive and self-directed learning process.

Facilitators are not teachers of the subject content. Their role is to support the learning process: helping participants listen to one another, develop focus, make use of different perspectives and take increasing responsibility for the group’s work.

The facilitator pair

Facilitators work in pairs. Depending on previous experience, contributors may take the role of facilitator or co-facilitator, but the pair works together in supporting the group.

Before the course, each facilitator pair will meet to discuss how they want to work together and prepare for the first meetings with their PBL group. The group’s recurring meeting time will already have been established before the course starts.

The first meetings

The beginning of the course is particularly important for creating trust and a shared way of working. During the first meetings, the facilitator pair takes a more active role in helping the group to:

  • get to know each other and create an inclusive learning environment;
  • agree on how they want to communicate and work together;
  • understand the PBL process and the overall course structure;
  • explore how responsibility for meetings, inquiry and sharing can gradually be distributed within the group;
  • make space for different disciplinary, institutional and cultural perspectives.

As the group develops, the facilitators gradually step back and support participants in taking greater responsibility for the learning process.

During the course

Facilitators follow the development of the group, support participation and help the group when it encounters difficulties or loses direction. This may involve asking questions, helping the group reflect on its process, reconnecting to its purpose or experimenting with different ways of working.

Facilitators are also part of the wider HEDS facilitator community. Regular opportunities for facilitator exchange and support are organised during the course.
